It’s real, folks, and it may just take Philadelphia’s public transportation system out of the 20th century and into the future. Plan Philly reports that while the SEPTA’s New Payment Technology (NPT) is behind schedule, the prototypes for the new turnstiles have been unveiled and are currently being tested.

The new payment system will reportedly be installed in about half of Philly public transportation stations by the spring of 2014, with the remaining units coming by summer 2014, assuming everything goes according to plan (it won’t).
